I commence each painting with a grid as a means of feeling out its dimensions and potential dynamics. The first intention is to establish an underlying beat on which to build with colour and any surface buildup. The grid continues to carry the work forward with varying rhythmic permutations, until colour and structure come together with an ultimate significance. This is
the moment when I am released from anxiety and I can let go and move on.

However initial satisfaction can fade and there is frequently that ‘What if?’ factor. The need to move out of the safety zone and court disaster. From a potentially destructive act to achieve something perilous and unpredictable.
