From the same director of The Lives of Others and also set in East Berlin, the narrative is said to be inspired by the life of the painter Gerhard Richter.  Kurt is a young artist haunted by pre-war memories of the beautiful aunt who told him "never look away".  When at art school he falls in love with fashion student Ellie he is unwittingly reconnecting with the tragic events he witnessed as a child.
