An entomologist wanders among the dunes in search of rare insects and, having missed the last bus, stays overnight with a young widow whose tumbledown shack is at the bottom of a pit.  When he wakes in the morning the rope ladder he used to descend has been removed, leaving him trapped.  What follows is a weird, dreamlike allegory with exceptional black and white imagery accompanied by a haunting soundtrack.  Winner of a special jury prize at Cannes and nominated for two Oscars.
