Graham Giles - Figuratively Speaking
Fishermen at Sizewell Beach
When I paint I like to immerse myself directly in my landscape subject-matter despite all the practical difficulties of working out of doors.
In fact the changing weather and light (and goats clambering over fences) is what makes painting vivid and alive for me: I am turned on by what the world looks like and feels like, and I want to share that excitement through the discoveries I make with “the oleous paste in its sticky inconvenience” in Lawrence Gowing's memorable description of paint. I have no interest in copying photographs.
